Reisverslag The Wildcats
24 januari 2014
From Sun City we drove more or less around Phoenix cty centre and Chandler. After Chandler we entered the desert south of Phoenix. The landscape was about the same as the desert around New River, but with more mountains nearby. The road was very straight. If you didn't switch lanes to pass by trucks, you wouldn't have to use the wheel that often. After an hour a very sharp mountain became visible on the horizon. It was one of those peaks of the postcards. That peak was getting larger and larger. The cold stone rose higher making the sight even more impressive. At the foot of Picacho Peak we stopped at a gas station and souvenir shop, but very soon we proceeded to our destination Tucson.
Coleman had arranged a very nice hotel very near the campus. I could even walk to the International office. On that campus, everything was based on the different faculties. Every faculty got its own banner. But more imprtant than the faculties ware the Arizona Wildcats. This association covers all sports associated with the university. It's like the MUSST in Maastricht, but instead of all the different clubs (like Uros, DM, etc.) every athlete represents the Wildcats. The American football stadium was quite ugly, but immense. A huge concrete arena for the best football players of the Wildcats is surrounded with somewhat smaller fields for other sports of which the baseball and tennis fields were the most prominent.
After we had dinner, the Coleman's went to their concert. I didn't have a ticket so I looked for the pubs around the campus. I ended up at The Surly Wench. It was a very nice pub with lots of different beers, pool tables, darts and an old fashioned jukebox. Also the pirate-themed attributes made it quite awesome. Too bad I was there on a tuesday night, so not that many people were over there. After a couple of drinks I went back to the hotel and the day after we hit the road again for our return north.
